Let AI help write your tab-grouping rules.

AI writes rules. Tabula uses them.

Tabula’s AI tools help turn your desired groups, existing groups or uncovered tabs into regular-expression rules. Those rules match tab titles or domains, just like rules you write yourself.

You can use sidebar search, domain grouping and custom rules without AI. For AI assistance, choose between copying a prompt into a tool you already use and enabling a direct connection from the extension. The landing-page animation is an illustration of this process, not a live AI request.

Start with the copy-and-paste workflow

This path does not require an API key in Tabula. You decide which prompt to share with your AI tool and which response to import.

1. Open the Rules page. Choose “From my current groups”, “Describe the groups I want” or “Improve my current rules”.
2. Review the generated prompt before pasting it into your preferred AI chat. It may contain tab titles, domains and existing rules.
3. Ask the AI for the rule JSON requested by the prompt. Copy its response into “Import JSON” in Tabula.
4. Review the imported patterns, targets and rule order. Select “Apply rules” when you are ready to group the tabs.

Or connect your own AI endpoint

Direct calling is optional and off by default. In the Rules page, find “Skip the copy-paste — call AI directly”. Choose a Gemini API key or an OpenAI-compatible local endpoint.

For Gemini, enter your own key. For the local option, enter the endpoint URL, model name and a token if your endpoint needs one. The extension supports HTTP endpoints on localhost or 127.0.0.1; for example, http://localhost:4000/v1/chat/completions. A local endpoint can still forward requests to an external provider, depending on how you configure it.

Use “Test connection”, grant the relevant permission if prompted, and enable direct calling. “Generate & apply” replaces your entire saved rule list with the generated rules, without a manual import checkpoint. Export any rules you want to keep before running it. Review the new rules afterward, then select “Apply rules” to regroup your open tabs.

Know what you share

Ordinary tab organization runs inside Chrome. Direct AI calling sends the generated prompt to the provider or local endpoint you selected. There is no Tabula-owned server in between. Prompt contents can include tab titles, domains and saved rules.

API keys and endpoint credentials are stored locally in Chrome, not synced. Your AI provider’s usage limits, charges and data handling apply. With the manual workflow, the AI service receives whatever you paste into it. Remove sensitive information before sharing a prompt.

Check the result and keep control

AI-generated patterns can be too broad, miss useful tabs or overlap. Check the rule preview, move specific rules above general ones, and remember that the first matching rule wins. Edit or disable a rule that does not reflect how you work.

If a direct request fails, check the connection settings, model name, provider limits and whether your local service is running. You can return to the manual prompt-and-import workflow or write rules yourself. Never paste an API key into a support message or a shared screenshot.
